Instamatic’s Greatest Misses – a retrospective

Kodiak Moment - the Instamatic CD - Artwork by Pheugoo

‘Kodiak Moment’ promotional Instamatic CD – Artwork by Pheugoo

A lot of my old boots/mashups haven’t been online for years – most people don’t know I’ve created something like 50+ mashups as Instamatic since 2003, more as DJNoNo and as tbc and various aliases…there have been quite a few mashups ‘retrospectives’ recently, and the odd request to find various tracks so here is my Greatest Misses…tracks that fell down the cracks!

Also a few tracks such as the Jump megamix (Jump x2 and Renegade Trouble) and the Too Many Egos haven’t been properly released before.

stillhaventfoundit Also includes my first released mashup – FSOL vs Peaches, so you can see how far little I’ve developed…I did think ‘shall I redo some of these?’ or fix some of the mistakes I can hear now – I thought not since I hate that when say bands re-release ‘tweaked’ or ‘improved’ versions of old songs. Publish and be damned!

Thanks to RevMenagerie who requested my Negativland / String Quartet mashup…

NOTE: Some of these tunes are severely NSFW – especially FCUKK Fashion…

  1. The Future Sound of Peaches (FSOL vs Peaches)
  2. Missy Wants A White Horse (Missy vs Laidback and jacky – one of my personal faves)
  3. Fragile Tomorrow (Kings of Tomorrow vs Fragile State)
  4. FCUKK Fashion (Prodigy vs Bowie and DJ Yoeri) (as Instore – with the Kate Moss situation strangely topical now!)
  5. Kylie’s Ass is a Spaceship (Kylie vs SFA vs NERD)
  6. Still haven’t Found It (Negativland live vs String Quartet)
  7. Blancmange Milkshake (Kelis vs Blancmange)
  8. Satan Bush Blair (Bootie edit – original featured over at Bushwhacked)
  9. Ludakriss (Kid Carpet intro)(here’s the original with the Kid Carpet ‘Jump’ intro)
  10. Altogether Let it Be Me (An excercise in combining songs inspired by Pachelbel’s Canon – Nancy Sinatra vs The Farm)
  11. Radio 4Play (Shannon vs Radio4) - I got kind of obsessed by Shannon’s ‘Let the Music Play’, and then Kelis’s Milkshake…shows huh?
  12. My Muppet Band (Tokyo Ska Orchestra vs D12 – originally over at Strangely Familiar website)
  13. Infidel Milkshake Party (Wyclef & Missy vs Kelis)
  14. Work it Tiger (Le Tigre vs Masters at Work)
  15. Egyptian Jet (Bangles vs Jet -a month later a mix of this appeared on 7″ – dunno if it was mine?)
  16. Shannon’s Knuckles (Shannon vs Rankie Knuckles)
  17. Madison Heartbreak (Maisonettes vs Madison Avenue)
  18. Brightside Slippy (never totally finished since I was afflicted by a sudden inexplicable hatred of the Killers)
  19. Fire (Bootie edit of a minimix – DJ Zebra mixed into Fire mix (Grandmaster Scott vs Radio4 vs Electric6 vs Trammps)
  20. Jump minimix – Ludakriss / Jumpx2/ Renegade Trouble – first time online! (Made for Uprising 3.5, also played in part at Bastard -
Kid Carpet / Ludacris vs Kriss Kross / House of Pain vs Kriss Kross / Wildchild vs Beasties)

and from the DJNoNo canon, a few rarities:

  1. I Love Happy Hardcore (Fuck Happy) – first DJNoNo boot, done for a Happy Hardcore competition where mrNo shows how much he likes Happy Hardcore…
  2. Too Many Egos - full version (various based on the odd acapella version of EgoRocker and a pisstake of several Ego-Rocker boots – a short 70s version that eventually appeared on Marty Batfreak’s 100 mix)
  3. Em is a Naggin Fly (Crossover vs Eminem vs Roy Orbison – pisstake of Eminem boots and mrNo trying to prove Bush No.10 wrong when he said Eminem boots now didn’t work. Did thaNo succeed? Erm, pass…)

The Revenge of Polka-Hop – B-Boy Polka

Sunday, November 13th, 2005

This is fer all yer Polka-heads out thurr. Nu recruit 2 da Polka Cru is DJ Kool Herc. He’s startz a nu trend – polka-breaking, nah not breaking the accordion, tha’s silly, but spinning on ‘is head in lederhosen, while we spin da polka breakz.

We like 2 leave ‘im 2 his little fetishes, ‘he’s ‘armless, but it takes all sorts I ‘spose….?

So dis is DJ Kool Herc ‘B-Boy Boogie’ vs Lawrence Welk ‘Accordion Man’. Well smart!

Madonna’s Hung Up (aka Let’s Hang Madonna)

Sunday, November 13th, 2005

Yes I know we’re all probably totally SICK of that Madonna single, so I did this little mashup as revenge, adding in JuniorVasquez’s cheeky ‘If Madonna Calls’ as a response to her song.

Kind of works…everyone’s schizo about that blasted Madonna song tho, even on the dancefloor!

Burn Your Radio (Leftfield vs Queen and Public Enemy) – new mashup!

Sunday, November 13th, 2005

I wasn’t dead, only sleeping  Just wanted to come back with something good and I think this might do the trick…

I played this at Bastard to end my recent set, seemed to get a good response so I thought I would release it into the wild – this is the mastered and slightly tweaked version. Also think it might have been played at Bootie (?). Definitely one for the dancefloor – it was inspired by podcasting, and especially the Radio Clash podcast I do.

Includes Queen – “Radio GaGa”, Leftfield “Open Up” and Public Enemy “Burn Hollywood Burn”

And has a great video now courtesy of Mistah Pok – thank ye kindlee!

Golden Beard (Blur Parkspliced B-side)

Parkspliced main over by Tim Baker

As mentioned over at my Instamatic blog I was involved with the Blur remix album, Parkspliced. I also did a mashup of one of the b-sides from Parklife, which was probably the best mashup I did for that project, or possibly the best one I’ve done, period.

I quite wisely avoided using all but 2.1 seconds of the Blur track which was a terrible modern jazz wankathon; and mixed in other beard/hair related tracks, namely Nina Simone’s cover of the folk standard ‘ Black is the color’ and Slowdive’s cover of Sid Barrett’s ‘Golden Hair’ in honour of my partner John (who does indeed have a golden beard, well in the right sort of light it is…).

The track seems very haunting; and Nina Simone and Slowdive work so well…

Comfortable Run (Air vs Scissor Sisters)

Wednesday, May 11th, 2005

This one was done quite a while ago (way before the album, the tour, and SS getting so big, when they released Comfortably Numb as a single) and many people tried this acapella with, well everything…it’s such a weird tonality and vocal that not many things work…so when I heard the then-new Air album ‘Talkie Walkie’ (well worth getting) the track ‘Run’ leapt out at me as something that would work.

This track, is, well not so chilled but from a cold and scary place…

Mama Believe Me Now (ELO vs Scissor Sisters)

Wednesday, May 11th, 2005

Now many people have said that Scissor Sisters are ripping off Elton John…wrong they are actually ripping off the much less trendy sound of ELO…listen to Laura then Mr. Blue Sky and see what you think.

So inspired by that revelation (and wanting reclaim ELO as being not as bad as people think) I mixed ‘Believe Me Now’ with ‘Take Your Mama Out’ – again like Whitney I realised how sad that song is; about a closeted guy coming out to his mother (I think)
