New ambient mashups

A few I stuck up over at Multiply:

Golden Beard (Blur Parkspliced B-side)

May 11th, 2005

Parkspliced B-sides cover, designed by Tim Baker

As mentioned over at my Instamatic blog I was involved with the Blur remix album, Parkspliced. I also did a mashup of one of the b-sides from Parklife, which was probably the best mashup I did for that project, or possibly the best one I’ve done, period.

I quite wisely avoided using all but 2.1 seconds of the Blur track which was a terrible modern jazz wankathon; and mixed in other beard/hair related tracks, namely Nina Simone’s cover of the folk standard ‘ Black is the color’ and Slowdive’s cover of Sid Barrett’s ‘Golden Hair’ in honour of my partner John (who does indeed have a golden beard, well in the right sort of light it is…).

The track seems very haunting; and Nina Simone and Slowdive work so well…

Comfortable Run (Air vs Scissor Sisters)

May 11th, 2005

This one was done quite a while ago (way before the album, the tour, and SS getting so big, when they released Comfortably Numb as a single) and many people tried this acapella with, well everything…it’s such a weird tonality and vocal that not many things work…so when I heard the then-new Air album ‘Talkie Walkie’ (well worth getting) the track ‘Run’ leapt out at me as something that would work.

This track, is, well not so chilled but from a cold and scary place…

Mama Believe Me Now (ELO vs Scissor Sisters)

May 11th, 2005

Now many people have said that Scissor Sisters are ripping off Elton John…wrong they are actually ripping off the much less trendy sound of ELO…listen to Laura then Mr. Blue Sky and see what you think.

So inspired by that revelation (and wanting reclaim ELO as being not as bad as people think) I mixed ‘Believe Me Now’ with ‘Take Your Mama Out’ - again like Whitney I realised how sad that song is; about a closeted guy coming out to his mother (I think)

Whitney Goes To Hollywood

May 11th, 2005

OK one of the best moments of my life was seeing Holly Johnson do ‘Power of Love’ at my first Pride in ‘97 with fireworks kicking off behind us at the same time, a very moving moment, especially as we were all glad that Holly was there at all (he’s still doing well since, I’m glad to report) and I think that gave the whole event a pathos and finality….I’d never really thought much of the song before then.

So this originally was a mashup with that annoying Frankee woman (hence the ‘cover’ comment seemed to work so well) but it just wasn’t working til I realised how Whitney’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ is actually quite yearning and sad, if you listen to the lyrics…hence Whitney met Frankie and the rest is, well, history…

Caroline’s Long Gone (SFA vs Beach Boys)

May 11th, 2005

Caroline's Long Gone cover

One of my best bootups/mashlets ever was this one using one of my favourite Super Furry Animals tracks ‘Long Gone’ with ‘Caroline, No’ from the Beach Boys…seems to some up Brian Wilson’s state of mind, so I did a skit on the SFA’s album cover using Brian instead of Howard Marks…

I think it works quite well, but then again I would wouldn’t I?
