Okay you’ve got 2 Windows PCs right…

Friday, June 24th, 2005

...and you'd expect them to talk together over Ethernet if I plugged them together, especially as one is XP?

BZZZT! Wrong...it magically worked for a short while then died totally. I have no idea why...tried all kinds of settings but the software helpfully that comes with XP to install onto your other machines works with all versions of Windows except...you guessed it...Windows 2000 Pro which I'm running.

I'm getting close to putting the DVD-RW drive back in one PC, burning all my data, then transferring the drive to the new PC...I don't want to burn 20-30 gigs of data tho if I could just get this networking thing to work..AAARGH.

Any ideas from you networking geeks out there?

(anybody who mentions Mac networking being better gets a free trip to Hades, expenses paid...I fully expect to just plug a Mac Mini if I get one right in and it just works...annoyingly. Please don't rub it in...)

HiHOdeo…

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

If you want to know what Odeo is all about go and sign up, and you'll get invited -just had a poke around, and yes some kind person has added Radio Clash and I already have 3 subscribers over there (yes you, Fin!) which was a nice surprise...

It's a cool-looking site, obviously doing a soft-launch Gmail style, well designed and the content creation stuff (not ready yet, sadly) looks interesting. It seems like a hybrid of seemingly the best bits of libsyn, feedburner, technorati tags, and podcastalley...could be very interesting, seeing that Podshow has gone quiet/all sirius on us and the others seem to be struggling a bit...and like audioscrobbler and myspace you get to at least put a name and maybe face to those listening to you. Aha community aspect? Hmm looking as I have recently at the success of Myspace this could go far...

I love the well written little comments under the entry boxes like "Of course, we're not going to spam you. That's so Internet 1.0." :-D

Now if only the phone call option worked (I wonder if it will work in the UK?) I could do holiday-casts ahem I mean on the spot reports... :-D

I have one request tho -- make sure your spidery bot thingummy has nice manners and prints out the number of subscribers on my web logs like NewsWire and Bloglines (I think) do in the bot name. That's reet polite, thar tis...

Downing Street Memo - why the silence?

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

I think for us in the UK the whole WMC/Iraq thing blew up several years ago with the David Kelly affair, a stain on Blair's government still which I doubt will wash away anytime soon in the minds of people, but we're used to the fact we were lied to - not happy with it, but we've had the inquiry and headlines, the threats to the BBC and media and jeering on all sides. Certainly I think it was the closest to an impeachment anytime soon.

What astounds me about the whole Downing Street memo is that the news has been seemingly so quiet outside the UK - in fact inside the UK it was mooted and swallowed up with the election and what effect it had.

But why aren't people outside the UK, finally confronted with what's been not denied and apparently confirmed as the truth, jumping up and down? The silence is deafening...

Maybe Madge Weinstein is right, maybe we are all in a depression, faced with government we expect to lie to us; expecting to be treated that way. It makes me so angry - but where to place that anger so it's productive?

Hmm if there is someone like Gandhi or Martin Luther King out there, now would be a very good time ? Or maybe we should look to ourselves for the vision and some direction?

But where?

I take a photograph / I dream in black and white

Tuesday, June 21st, 2005

Not mashup or mostly music related, but some of you might know I take quite a lot of photos - my archive was something in the region of 10,000 before I went digital, and I hate to think what it's like now!

Thankfully for you lot I've sorted out the best recent ones for my photoblog. It's only Simpleviewer on this slow server so please be gentle and patient with it... It has my San Francisco pictures online for the first time, where I was DJing at Bootie last year, and also my Rome and South Africa pictures, my portraits and soon my City & Guilds work.

Lemme know what you think!
