Know Your Rights: great(bear) overview

Thursday, January 5th, 2006

Greatbearmd again has a cool overview article on rights and DRM and the technological advancements that brought us to this overly licensed, non-skippable and downloadlably litigious future.

Can’t wait for the second part - many articles have been written about IPR and technology in the past, not so much about where we are going now; what with Myspace, bittorrent and Dean Gray, it seems the future’s not so bleak as the Major 4 made it out to be during the scares in 2003 and 2004, it’s quite bright if you’re a small artist and use the internet to expose your talents.

And it seems with a renaissance of small guerilla gigs and truly indie bands that the bleakness was most likely to do with high expense accounts and cocaine paranoia at the Big 4 and the major media companies conglomerating than some major destruction of musical civilisation as we know it.

But we knew that anyway ;-)

Wordpress 2 now out

Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

…ooh new WP 2 is out! Built in Spam and DB backup plugins, new UI and customisable post editing GUI, sounds very cool.

Who wants to bet they haven’t sorted out that multiple enclosure issue tho?….grr. And no-one has created a plugin for podcasting in WP I bet…

Another instance of Big Brother CD DRM & Disable your Autorun NOW!

Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

Following the shameful Sony rootkit debacle looks like otehr companies haven’t learned it’s PR lesson. From Ars Technica via greatbearmd’s blog that now the new Coldplay CD X&Y has DRM automatically installed in some countries such as India and a long legal message saying how the CD won’t work in the majority of CD burners, and some game and car CD players….again a major company is installing DRM and other naughty practices via autorunning CDs now the IPR horse has bolted.

So please to avoid things like Sony’s Rootkit and other DRM technologies being installed by stealth disable autorun on your PC - see this site for more information. Autorun is when your CD plays automatically when inserted, but it’s a major security risk and even Microsoft has realised this as it now has disabled this in XP Service Pack 2 as standard…

I don’t think Macs have this issue, but they should be pissed off too as most DRM like the Coldplay CD won’t even play on your machine.
