Len Lye DVD Campaign Starts Here!

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

One of the best things about going to Tate Modern with my Dad, his ladyfriend Christine and John was seeing Len Lye FINALLY shown in an art gallery - I’ve been fan of this animator’s work since the early 90’s, when the university where I did my art degree had a few videos from the G.P.O. film unit. He invented the cameraless animation technique of drawing straight onto the film - something I immediately tried to do!

Here, have a look:

Colour Box - the one in the Tate:

and

Swinging the Lambeth Walk.

So WHY OH WHY can you not (apart from a paltry 3 on a collection) get his films on DVD? When you get utter Hollywood drivel pumped out by the bucketload and someone who did innovative and magical films like this can only get an old VHS? :-(

Tempted to buy the VHS and transfer it…these films are crackly and noisy at best, so don’t survive modern codecs, it would be shame to add more quality loss. Sort it out Royal Mail, Postal Heritage and co.!

Like it? Well show it some link love:
