OK this was premiered at CMP 9 - I think this is fairly obvious and hope no-one has already done it, I finished it several weeks ago and have been scared since then someone would do it as well!

Basically the new Neon Neon (Gryff from Super Furry Animals and Boom Bip) is ace, but the track 'I Lust U' is more than slightly influenced by a certain Depeche Mode track, so I've mashed People are People and I Lust U together, with occasional interventions from Latour's People Are Still Having Sex.

I think it's brill and one of my best, but then I would would'nt I?

Well the Socialist Worker Party's comment form on the rose-tinted sweetness and light article about the festival isn't working, so I'll post this here:

"I was one of the people at the Love Music Hate Racism carnival, too young for the original Rock Against Racism but regard that concert with great respect.

Overall it was a great festival, but with a few major issues.

It's a shame though that unlike the Pride events held at Victoria Park in the 90s there was fences and police everywhere, people confiscating or refusing entry to people with plastic water bottles (not just glass and alcohol) - but a really poor selection of alcohol inside.

But the biscuit was taken (away) by the police stopping the event - the aforementioned PCS tent. It wasn't unsafe - in fact the tent was part empty - and people were just having a good time. I don't expect the police at a political event to just shut the tent down at 5:20 for no explained reason - leaving DJ Hype and the poor MC to try and explain after getting us to step back, which we did. It was lucky that there wasn't a riot...

Yes people had a great time, and it was the one part of the LMHR I felt racial and cultural divides breaking down with people dancing to everything to banghra to drum and bass - but I find it odd that the police would be in control of such an event, given the SWP/IS history. And as we left the organisers (not police) were rudely barking at people to move out of the way, but most of the problem was the ice cream van parked in front of the exit.

Also the irony of asking people to buy tshirts and bags to support the event. Capitalism anyone? Oh it's ok to wear a tshirt if it has the right logo on it? Very dodgy.

So although I did have a good time, I did feel LMHR and SWP and the Unions involved were skating a very fine line - I was left feeling disheartened rather than empowered, and felt that rather than talk to someone about it they'd rather sell me a tshirt.

So this is the revolution in action is it?"

I was talking about this with John (who is a member of the SWP, I am most definitely not although have leanings that way) - I think the festival compromised the SWP and LMHR and various groups involved.

They became the very things they railed against.

Last Thursday we did a special themed gig at the Parkade in Second Life around the music of the Pet Shop Boys.
In this mix I included To Speak is a Sin, one of my coming out songs, as it is as I correctly guessed before Mr Tennant's coming out, about a gay bar - takes me back to those times!

Pet Shop Boys - Go West

Pet Shop Boys - To Speak Is A Sin

Pet Shop Boys - Tall Thin Men (Demo)

All of the tracks are my PSB faves - mostly B-sides and album tracks with some singles thrown in and mashups/remixes.

Of note are Go West - in there because of my memory in 2006 seeing the Pet Shop Boys at the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco and belting out the words along with all the men there doing the motions and raising the roof, an amazing moment.

And To Speak is a Sin - my coming out song, which ironically was Neil's Coming out album, and it is about gay bars, the old sort like The Coleherne in London, which I really associate with that song...

The mashup by DJ Magnet - Love Comes Running Up That Hill Quickly has emotional resonance for me, and DJ Culture is about the first gulf war - all those satellite fantasies and wars we've (not) wom. And I think You Know Where You Went Wrong was the first bside of the first Pet Shop Boys 12" I had. And I own Introspective on cassette somewhere and I Want A Dog along with the funny Always in my House are the favourite tracks from that, I like the same sort of irreverent approach to their own songs like Soft Cell did with Ecstatic dancing...

And the ending of Tall Thin Men was accidental - Amanda had problems with her feed so I did another song (forgetting to switch off the audio in SL at first, so at the start you're hearing the song relayed sattelite-like through the server) and is an unused demo from Closer to Heaven. I love it because a) it refutes the gay stereotype of liking showtunes and b) rhyming Ute Lemper with temper. A showtunes song about hating showtunes? CLASS.

In a conversation recently I found several people who had no idea who Negativland are - being the sort to want to show people new music and bring it to them, here are two shows about the Bay Area merry band of pranksters, culturejammers, CB radio and cutup freaks that not only pissed off U2 (bonus!) fell out with SST (seems like everyone has since) they also pioneered using the media to subvert it's own message with Helter Stupid and the murders by David Brom, inspiring mashups and cutup culture in the process.

They ARE the grandaddies of mashup. So pay attention children!

This episode, inspired by the dense collage of Over The Edge shows that the band have been doing since the early 80's on KPFA in Berkeley, takes us from the start of Negativland shrouded in the fog and sex chemicals of Concord in 1980, to being sued bea sate by Bono and co. in 1991 even ironically as U2 embark on the culturejamming inspired tour that was ZooTV...
