DJNoNo Crumplstock 10 set

Crumplstock 10 - DJNoNo set Phoning In From The Apocalypse

There was a good reason why DJNoNo’s Crumplstock set was called ‘Phoning In From The Apocalypse’ was called that, an angry upbeat set – it was meant to be more positive and it is in parts with the Happy Hardcore, but the apocalyptic theme was there from the start I just amped it up.

I played a lot of originals, mashups, remixes, metal 8-bit and symphonic covers, bits from CONELRAD and Kids in the Hall, rave, breakbeat, 80’s doomy pop, and started with a Pansy Division track ‘Smells Like Queer Spirit’ for Pride/current events I’d heard the night before at Duckie. Good tunes for the end of the world….

There’s a few unreleased tracks in this Crumplstock set, the HardCure track ‘Let’s Go To A Whispering Forest’, NoNo Limits and a new demo using Wikka Wrap vs Doja Cat – and All My Lubbers totally violating the Twitch TOS, but fuck it.

Bootie Top 10 – Genesis vs U2 vs Negativland

Instamatic Still Haven't Thrown It All Away (Genesis vs U2 vs Negativland) mashup cover Bootie Top 10

I am seriously behind posting my mashups to my site and here – check my Sowndhaus page for the up-to-date latest releases, but this recent mashup made the Bootie Top 10 for June – surprised because it features Negativland, not the usually most ‘pop’ of artists (although they are popstars in my heart…) but the rest is very radio friendly.

It mixes Genesis with more memories of 1986 with ‘Throwing It All Away’ – one of my first albums was Invisible Touch and I still stand by that album – mixed with U2’s stadium-bothering I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and the lawyer-bothering ‘The Letter U and the Numeral 2’ acapella and ‘radio edit’ which U2 famously nuked and is a part of mashup/copyright history.

I even did a ‘booper’ radio version – I asked The Weatherman if I could use some of his booper and he said yes, so I took some bits to edit out the rudeness, still think those bits are too strange for radio, but Stranger Things have happened (see what I did there?)

Pride Mashups: Relax And Take The Easy Cure (Aurora vs MIKA) & Lizzo vs Patrick Cowley & Sylvester

Instamatic - Relax And Take The Easy Cure (Aurora vs MIKA) Pride mashups

As it’s Pride month (well in the States/the Stonewall anniversary, our Pride is the start of July in London, Brighton is in August.) so here’s two new mashups/ First is a mashup and video of not one but TWO queer artists – MIKA and Aurora .

Her song ‘Cure for Me’ is about conversion therapy, so it’s sadly very apt for these times. No Cure for Me! MIKA – who recently presented Eurovision, his Relax, Take It Easy song which contrast the Aurora vocal, like a call and answer, and has some quite alarming lyrics to contrast the chorus. It’s intentionally bittersweet pop vs pop with a deeper message.

It got it’s exclusive first play on DJSQWRL’s Bootie stream early this morning, and went down well, so here’s to many more! And it has a video – had a lot of fun with effects and layering, it’s one of my best.

And also this is the second mashup I made for Pride this time from Captain Obvious – my Lizzo vs Patrick Cowley ft Sylvester – Do Ya Wanna Funk mashup, very 1978 disco like the Lizzo song – About Damn Time – in two versions, extended and shorter ‘radio’ edit (as if I’d ever be played on the radio!)

And BONUS: here’s a quick mashup I did of Lizzo vs Daft Punk, Lose Yourself To Dance with About Damn Time.

I hope these two get played at various Pride celebrations for my queer family 🙂

Weeknd vs Fez / Disasterpeace

tbc aka Instamatic Call Yr Fez (Weeknd vs Disasterpeace) mashup bootleg game music bastard pop downtempo glitch

It was a Video Game Challenge last week, and I had fun messing with the music of various games. One of the few games I totally fell in love with and was obsessed by for months if not years was Fez, the 2D/3D platformer from 2012. A big part of that was the music. The game had a deep significance for me, something almost spiritual?

These two from Rich Vreeland aka Disasterpeace’s soundtrack for Fez vs Weeknd were the result, but I think this glitchy one was a bit too late for the challenge. Fun with the Hysteresis plugin.

Call Yr Fez (Weeknd – Call Out Your Name vs Disasterpeace – Sync/Glitch (from Fez))

tbc aka Instamatic - Save Yr Fez (Weeknd & Ariana Grande vs Disasterpeace) mashup bootleg video game soundtrack bastard pop downtempo

And I love all my mashup children but this one is my favourite. Something about the Weeknd plus Fez’s distorted glitchy mournful soundscapes just works – but Ariana brings human warmth especially at the end, which always makes me smile.

I’m sure it’ll fall into the black hole that all my other ‘You Won’t Like It’ ‘record label’ releases have fallen into, and was totally ignored like all my entries for the challenge (but oki’s amazing Queen mashup toitally deserved to win) but this is very much how I hear things.

P.S. this is my first Ariana Grande mashup EVER!

Katamari Sound Machine (Rhythm Is Gonna Funk You) (Gloria Estefan & The Miami Sound Machine vs Katamari Forever)

Instamatic Katamari Sound Machine (Rhythm Is Gonna Funk You) (Gloria Estefan & The Miami Sound Machine vs Katamari Forever) mashup bootleg latin bastard pop Senor Coconut

Last week’s challenge was video game tunes, so of course I chose my favourite games – although in this case, it’s my favourite game soundtrack, I’ve never played Katamari Damacy or sequels!

Yes this is Senor Coconut remixing Katamari on the Funk it’s on the game soundtrack for Katamari Forever…and works perfectly with Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine.

I wanted to do a mashup with Katamari on the Rocks, this is my third attempt since the 00’s, but it’s just too busy. So hence Senor Cocounut’s more stripped back take on Shibuya-Kei (this in fact probably was my first musical experience of that genre back in the mid 00’s) worked better.

Merengue! Cha Cha Cha!

Fun fact: as an 80’s teen I was a MASSIVE Gloria Estefan err, fan. Had several of her – well Miami Sound Machine’s – 80’s albums including Anything For You that included ‘Rhythm…’.

Making her into the King (Queen?) of All The Cosmos is all kinds of funny though for the artwork….

Fleetwood Mac vs Fleet Foxes / Philip Glass Animals

A double shot of downtempo punnery again for the Crumplbangers Discord Challenge – it’s the only reason I make mashups nowadays seemingly!

One Fleetwood Mac vs Fleet Foxes – a combo I am surprised has not been done before, and the clever pun of Philip Glass Animals, after the New York composer and the London artist.

tbc aka Instamatic - Fleet (Wood Mac) Foxes (Fleetwood Mac vs Fleet Foxes) mashup downtempo soft rock bootleg bastard pop

Did someone say Fleetwood Mac? What would the Fox Say? Well he’d say Fleetwood Mac vs Fleet Foxes is the shiz. If rather horizontal.

Also some cultured Rime of the Ancient Mariner engravings by Gustav Dore as the artwork. Ooh fancy! If I ever do that Fleetwood Mac remix album I’ve been threatening for literal decades, this will be on it.

Fleetwood Mac Foxes (White Albatross) Fleetwood Mac – Albatross vs Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal

tbc aka Instamatic - Philip Glass Animals (Heatwaves In May) (Philip Glass & Paul Leonard-Morgan vs Glass Animals) mashup bootleg pun bastard pop downtempo soundtrack

And here is the Philip Glass vs Glass Animals downtempo mashup no-one was asking for! (Well the challenge did say genre clash was important, and nothing is more genre clash than modern classical /soundtrack vs EDM pop?).

Heatwaves is a surprising jam, with a very odd video about living and performing in a lockdown…yes the PTSD of that is basically staining all my work now, like a grain running through it all.

Marvin Gayle (Gayle vs Marvin Gaye)

Instamatic Marvin Gayle (Gayle vs Marvin Gaye) ABCDEFU What's Going On mashup bootleg bastard pop soul fuck you

I was trying to make Gayle vs Gaye Bykers On Acid – dunno why but given this is probably the best thing I’ve done this year, I’ll take it. Had fun recreating the cover as well, finding that rather odd Germanic typeface.

I did google/YT it, I don’t think it’s been done….She goes all soulful, her singing seems to suit a slower tempo, all drawn out. I didn’t like ABCDEFU when I first heard it, but it’s grown on me.

Manfred 2 Mann / Do Wah DiddyMen Had A Stripper Farm (Man 2 Man ft Man Parrish vs Manfred Mann vs Ken Dodd)

DJNoNo Manfred 2 Mann / Do Wah DiddyMen Had A Stripper Farm (Man 2 Man ft Man Parrish vs Manfred Mann vs Ken Dodd and the Diddymen) mashup bootleg crumplbanger silly bastard pop

DJNoNo has done his worst for the Crumplbangers Discord Artist Pun challenge…Probably the Crumpliest Flakiest thing DJNoNo has ever done, a bit like watching a car wreck in slow motion while huffing petrol.

There are a few extra special secret bits for Richest Llama and Titus Jones (oh hai!) but can you guess the two bits that DJNoNo was in stitches doing? A

Also contains TWO puns, an artist pun as requested but also a side-pun…Ken Dodd’s Diddymen vs Do Wah Diddy – which might have been done before , but NOT like this, LOL.

Richest Llama who was judging the challenge said ‘In my judging spreadsheet, for pun score I wrote “wow” and track score I wrote “insanity.” I still don’t know if I get it, but I kinda love it, it was like a fever dream turned into music? Please explain it to me.’

It’s not that explainable really…who knows how the mind of DJNoNo works.

Ingredients:

Man 2 Man ft Man Parrish – Male Stripper
Manfred Mann – Do Wah Diddy
Ken Dodd & The Diddy Men – Old McDonald Had A Farm
Ken Dodd & The Diddy Men – The Diddy Men Make A Record

Whistle Loudly/Quietly Through The Night (Drumsound & Bassline Smith vs Pablo Beltrán Ruiz)

DJNoNo - Whistle Loudly / Quietly Through The Night Drumsound & Bassline Smith - Through The Night vs Pablo Beltrán Ruiz - El Silbido (El Pito) mashup bootleg bastard pop Senor Coconut boogaloo boogalu latin drum and bass swing and bass

EDIT: This won the challenge! Although I do find it interesting that I win the challenge yet both have gotten get zero likes on Sowndhaus. :-/

DJNoNo decided to have another go at the Crumplbangers Discord Spanish Challenge, he felt more bangin’ drum and bass was needed, but after a failed attempt to meld Cuando Cuando Cuando with Shy FX (watch this space, likely a non-Spanish version might appear in future) he then found this track called El Silbido (El Pito) (The Whistle in two languages?) by Pablo Beltrán Ruiz, the Mexican bandleader who wrote the song that became “Sway”.

So he mixed it with Drumsound & Bassline Smith – Through The Night, but very strangely for him also liked the non-banging version just using the synths and acapella from that. He hopes this track is in Spanish, he can’t make out the words? It’s quite a short set of lyrics…but definitely by a Spanish speaking artist.

It’s Drum n Boogaloo, or Swing n’ Bass, Latin bugalĂş meets drum and bass, I have to say I am fast preferring the synthy less busy and less beat-y quiet version more and more.

So here are both, they are separate entries and mixed and tweaked differently – one a quiet whistle, another a loud one. Very much inspired by Senor Coconut and London Elektricity.

And again, DJNoNo never makes political statements but he feels that this needs to be dedicated to the people of Ukraine, who need help to make it through the night atm.

Which is far too serious for a DJNoNo mashup! But we live in serious times.

Crazy Loco (Gnarls Barkley vs Luisa Fernandez vs El Risitas)

Oh dear who told DJNoNo about a certain AI extraction site for the Crumplbangers Discord Spanish challenge? o.O

DJNoNo Crazy Loco (Gnarls Barkley vs Luisa Fernandez vs El Risitas) mashup bootleg bastard pop spanish disco laughing man

He wanted to have a go, and he took his favourite Spanish Disco Poppet (TM) Luisa Fernandez – Loco Por Ti (more famously know as Lay Love On You, it’s English version) and mixed it with Gnarls Barkley – Crazy and the legend that was El Risitas to create a 1978 Spanish disco crumplbanger.

It’s actually the English version as a background, but it’s almost identical to the Spanish version, but he used the Spanish lyrics for Luisa, and basically recreated the original.

He wants to dedicate this to the ‘Spanish Laughing Man’ Juan Joya Borja, aka El Risitas who we lost last year, Now out on his own net record label, ‘You Won’t Like It’
