Owdem Love (Hiraeth | Sehnsucht Saudade) (Oldham Tinkers vs Honeyroot) mashup cover

Created for the ‘Home’ Crumplbangers Challenge.

I don’t know if many here know I don’t come from London (not many people do) but I was born in Oldham…nearby to be accurate but it’s very much a tiny village near a town no-one knows next to Oldham, next to Manchester in Lancashire, UK. Very much on the edge of everything.

I was born a few miles from Oldham (Owdem) Edge in the song It does actually namecheck the town where I was born, but not my village. And this is local dialect, and from an album my dad had, and used to play. But both songs are related, cos Joy Division as I was growing up was recording in Pennine Studios and Cargo Studios a few miles from my house. Including the first version of Love Will Tear Us Apart….also Honeyroot is from Sheffield, where my parents are from, so it all comes full circle.

This was supposed to be a silly mashup, but then it made me cry cos we had to leave as there was no jobs there in Thatcher’s Britain, economic refugees. Hence the subtitles – Hiraeth – Welsh for longing, for a long gone home, homesickness, nostalgia. Saudade (Portugese) and Sehnsucht (German) have similar meanings, cos I might be part Irish but am not Welsh so felt I couldn’t just use that word. There isn’t a single English word that means the same, but I feel it, I really do.

That challenge inspired the theme of the current Xmas podcast too.
