I am seriously behind posting my mashups to my site and here – check my Sowndhaus page for the up-to-date latest releases, but this recent mashup made the Bootie Top 10 for June – surprised because it features Negativland, not the usually most ‘pop’ of artists (although they are popstars in my heart…) but the rest is very radio friendly.
It mixes Genesis with more memories of 1986 with ‘Throwing It All Away’ – one of my first albums was Invisible Touch and I still stand by that album – mixed with U2’s stadium-bothering I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and the lawyer-bothering ‘The Letter U and the Numeral 2’ acapella and ‘radio edit’ which U2 famously nuked and is a part of mashup/copyright history.
I even did a ‘booper’ radio version – I asked The Weatherman if I could use some of his booper and he said yes, so I took some bits to edit out the rudeness, still think those bits are too strange for radio, but Stranger Things have happened (see what I did there?)
Edit – and now with video! Spoilers if you haven’t watched Stranger Things 4, so be warned.
Those of you who are watching ST4 will know what this is about…a very emotional scene (no spoilers!) using Kate Bush- Running Up That Hill (and further used in the series frequenty). The choice of Depeche Mode is because the lyrics fitting that episode perfectly – other songs were not a thematic match.
I debated whether to post this, as its NOT a tribute mashup but it just happened that Depeche Mode works best with Running Up That Hill – and it’s such an obvious mash it’s probably been done before (I couldn’t find one though) and as Running Up That Hill is shooting up the charts and this moment will be gone shortly,
And seems a bit unfair on the surviving members of a band to basically ban them cos one member had died? I don’t like or feature mashups that are posted immediately after a death, in the first day or so…it’s been longer than that since Andy Fletcher sadly died.
Anyway, Depeche Mode fans seem OK with it, and it’s been received very well on Sowndhaus and Bootie’s mashup page, so unlike a lot of random stuff that’s hiding over at the Sowndhaus page I thought I’d post this first. I need to update the highlights here – got a lot of things to post and a big Pride-related post tomorrow.
Not one but TWO Montero / Beatles Mashups? With MY reputation? And I’m supposed to be retired and all…yeah…seems to be a short retirement now I’ve gotten Black Block out of the way. That was indeed blocking me and getting me down along with other stuff…but no promises, we’ll see if it lasts. I also fixed the key issues with the first one as well.
Also I wouldn’t let this acapella beat me, because it was frustration with that which made me gently ragequit.
Just following the orders of ‘Tiger Mom of Mashups’ Adriana of Bootie about making more Montero genre clash mashups…done for the Montero Genre Clash challenge on the Crumplbangers Discord.
This was my original idea, to use the acapella with a heavier track until I came across ‘You Never Give Me My Money’ – but now I know the actual KEY (D Sharp Phrygian? Weird) I found a Beatles track in that actual key – Day Tripper AND it does a key change like the chorus. Woo!
Pun name doesn’t work as well, but you can’t have it all…I bet UMG will hate this too!
Thanks to vixoriadrift for the advice on some timing issues on v1 of this mashup and key help, and Leandro Moniz and many others for the original acapella advice.
The Rise of The Aliases! I wasn’t exactly a stranger to aliases before but something about the second explosion of work around 2008-2010 meant I was wanting to branch out and not get bogged down with past failures while I was learning…many of which I had to fix on Volume 2!
instamatic, Captain Obvious, Dj cONTaMInAtioNs, Mashbusters, timbearland, Buyrite Soundsystem, they are all here, including never released originals for the first 72 which got hacked around in the final mix -and the receipts on what happened there – and various album projects I was part of like APC’s ‘We All Kissed A Girl’ or ones organised like the Joe Strummmer one This One’s For Joe and Fleetwood Mix.
Surprised at how uptempo this is, very much aimed at Bootie at this point, and how difficult some of it was to master – I was learning Ableton which strangely made it harder to mix and tweak since although I still use that software, I moved platforms since so many plugins don’t work on my Mac – and I was struggling with using electro house – Daft Punk, Justice etc which has all these mid-range frequencies that clash with vocals.
Also I set T-Racks not only to stun but quite often it’s ‘Kill’ setting – this was the middle of the loudness wars! Hence why I remastered gentler versions here – I don’t like my work to be that bricked, even if it does ‘cut through’ dancefloors.
36 tracks, mostly remastered and for the first time in lossless high quality – 25 album tracks and 11 bonuses with demos, alternate versions and extra tracks that didn’t make the album cut.
Part of a series called ‘let’s make the life hard of those who finished their festive mashup compilations in October’, – finally live, the Xmash compilation new and old Christmas Classics in ‘high’ quality – well we are in part talking DJNoNo here so quality is extremely subjective – but two new mashups from me, including one that has only just been finished and not previously released – the Massive Attack vs Greg Lake one.
Yes I made Massive Attack’s Teardrop simultaneously upbeat and festive and more depressing…how strange the change from major to minor. It is very much a Lockdown Xmas Coronacoaster bittersweet track…
Some old classics and two new mashups now in high quality in a single downloadable package! From bah humbug mashups and downtempo chilled dubby ambient mixes to upbeat drum and bass and party tunes, to a set of covers by TBC Poundsystem – and there even is a Secret Santa gift if you download the whole album!
Have a Happy Christmas and New Year in lockdown, and be as safe as possible…it is going to be a weird one, and this one goes out to those who have a love/hate thing with this time of year. I see you – and even better I have warped festive tunes for you!
Just a reminder that I’ll be talking to beardmeister Pimpdaddysupreme who is interviewing me part of his Masters of Mash series (who? me?) for 2 hours from 7pm BST this Wednesday 27th May (there might be something special if you turn up early though 😉 at his Twitch – PDSMix.
Pretty sure we’ll be talking mashups/bootlegs/bastard pop history, my background history and firsts, Bastard and UK bootleg scene, Bootie, this very blog and podcast, Bootleg Archive, videos and mashups I’ve done…unless we get distracted by our wonderful beards that is! 😉
A lot of tea will be dished (and cake, plenty of cake unless I eat it first). Be there or be somewhere else with a lot less beards. And where’s the fun in that?
