DJNoNo – Ballroom remastered, big band jazz vs hip-hop

An Xmas Eve treat – a remastered lossless version of DJNoNo’s 2015 Ballroom EP, my silly concept ‘album’ mixing big band jazz, exotica, latin jazz, easy listening, bossa nova, cha cha, samba, swing, space age etc with hip-hop and rhythm and blues. It was supposed to be the first DJNoNo album but never really worked like that, too short anyway.

Planned as the first DJNoNo album in 2005, I finished Stripper Jackson and Cha Cha Like It’s Hot to a chorus of mass apathy so the project got shelved, although most of these tracks were planned back then.

Given that ten years later I was retiring – it didn’t last long – I revisited it and completed it with a few extra tracks – the Death Grips is definitely one of those as D.G. didnt exist in 2005! But the rest are pretty much as they were planned in 2005.

Listening back reminds me how I hated the humourless electro-swing toffs that came later and stole all of our ideas and then claimed they were there first! Big reason why it took ten years, didn’t want to touch electro-swing with a vintage antique barge pole!

I was surprised no-one had done this project in that period – given the rise of Strictly Come Dancing I thought it inevitable that someone would do it, saving me the bother. Nope.

If you like this then check out the first DJNoNo album proper.

Dedicated to Mr Fab, Evolution Control Committee and all the Crumplebangers Crew.

As premiered in the latest podcast, this mashup isn’t my idea at all – Jeb Edwards aka DJ 50PoundNote asked me to make it as part of his set. He originally heard it on a friends tape from the 80’s but couldn’t find the original whitelabel (or it might have been mixed live?) so this is my recreation! It’s not a new combo bar The Clash bit, but the other combos I’ve heard are too fast or just don’t work. I think this works as an old-skool summer mashup – shame there isn’t any sun at the moment!

Obviously it’s Heaven 17’s Let Me Go vs Arthur Baker’s Rockers Revenge project ‘Walking on Sunshine’ with a little bit of Magnificent Seven by The Clash.

I’m not dead just been busy doing the podcast (it now has a baby also) and very few mashups…well loads of mashups and long mixes, but the mashups never get finished LOL.

Until now, well Xmas – I created two new Instamatic tracks for the mashup compilation I put together called ‘This One’s for Joe’ in honour of Joe Strummer who died 5 years ago on December 22nd. Hope you enjoy them!

And please check out the other tracks, there are some real gems there, and the artwork I did all of that also.

Instamatic – English Ghost (Dillinja & Lemon D vs The Clash)

Instamatic – Willesden Blue (The Orb vs Mescaleros vs Bonzo Dog Band)

Burn Your Radio (Leftfield vs Queen and Public Enemy) – new mashup!

I wasn’t dead, only sleeping 😉 Just wanted to come back with something good and I think this might do the trick…

I played this at Bastard to end my recent set, seemed to get a good response so I thought I would release it into the wild – this is the mastered and slightly tweaked version. Also think it might have been played at Bootie (?). Definitely one for the dancefloor – it was inspired by podcasting, and especially the Radio Clash podcast I do.

Includes Queen – “Radio GaGa”, Leftfield “Open Up” and Public Enemy “Burn Hollywood Burn”

EDIT: In 2012 I remade the video at higher quality, using clips from Leftfield and various Atomic Age clips:

NEW: My Telephone Doesn’t Work (Grandmaster Scott and Dynamic 3 vs Missy Elliott vs Kraftwerk vs Coldcut featuring Lisa Stansfield)

And to show I’m not dead, it’s my *fairly-new electro-tastic and Missy-reviving tune…basically the story goes a little something like this:

In 1983 or 4 a little known electro-hip-hop act called Grandmaster Scott and Dynamic 3 (they did the oft-copied ‘The Roof is On Fire’) recorded a track called ‘Request Line’ – now you probably know where this is going – Missy Eliott sampled this for her hit a couple of years back, ‘Work It’. Here I reunited the long-lost-cousins with some other classic electro/house tracks – ‘Telephone Call’ by Kraftwerk and Coldcut’s classic ‘My Telephone’ from their first LP with Lisa Stansfield on vocals.

This originally was intended to be a longer mix ‘Telephonic Symphony/Sympathy’ – a bit like the Money mix on Radio Clash; but ended up being this bootleg

*unless you knew where to err, dig that is 😉
