TV Nation (Daft Punk vs Spearhead vs Montrose)

tvnation-cover

TV Nation is a mashup that has been hanging around in multiple demo forms since 2008, now thanks to better stems and acapellas it’s finished (I know I said I retired but this was an opportunity too good to miss, always wanted this to work – also always wanted to do a good Daft Punk mashup). It’s Daft Punk – Television Rules The Nation vs Spearhead’s Rock The Nation vs Montrose – Rock The Nation and a few bits from the Beatnigs / Disposable Heroes of Hiphopcrisy – Television Drug of the Nation.

And it’s oddly topical now, with Donald Trump and the presidential elections coming up, the lines about media manipulation and fat tycoons, people staying in their bubble and not wanting to step out of it. Sadly still very current.

Thanks go out to DJ Schmolli, Ian Fondue, Jez Celebrity Murder Party and Lee Spoons for their advice and help.

Final Mashups #5 – Star Wars Gurls (Katy Perry vs Meco)

Spin that glitterball death star! In time for the new film (although completely by accident, long before Lucas was a twinkle in Disney’s eye, these mashups were started 5-10 years ago) here are the first of two Star Wars mashups.

Star Wars Gurls is Meco’s Star Wars goes space disco via California Gurls with Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg.

I’ve always had a bad feeling about this, it’s been a real disturbance in the Force over the years and probably still is a bucket of bolts, due to strange minor bits in the Meco track. In the end I had to use the Melodyne trial to force the acapella into key…Use the Force Luke! Well we know mashups shouldn’t be forced, but I’ve always wanted to release this, so treat it as a bit of fun. Still will make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs!

Talking of fun, the next mashup should be that…

Thanks to Jez Biggs, Ian Lloyd and Lee Prince for help making this mashup.

Final Mashups #4 – DJNoNo – Ballroom

ballroom-cover

Planned 10 years ago, the Ballroom EP (now album) has been a long time coming…two of the tracks were released (here in a remastered or better quality form) but the rest laid in the Unfinished folder.

Mixing ballroom music – big band, jazz, bossa nova, exotica, swing, easy listening and classical pops – with hip hop and r n’ b years before the term electroswing was invented, I’m surprised no-one has done an album concept like this in the last decade?

Dedicated to Mr Fab, Evolution Control Committee and all the Crumplebangers Crew.

Download DJNoNo Ballroom – zip file (73Mb) or Mediafire.

Tracklist:

  1. Mexican Love War (Public Enemy ‘Make Love Fuck War’ vs Geoff Love ‘Mexican Hat Dance’)
  2. Push It Muchacho (Salt n’ Pepa ‘Push It’ vs Esquivel ‘Mucha Muchacha’)
  3. March of the Forgotten (Joe Loss ‘Mark of the Mods’ vs Dre ft Eminem ‘Forgot about Dre’)
  4. Swing The Guillotine (Death Grips ‘Guillotine’ vs Glen Miller ‘In The Mood’)

Final mashups #3 – Impact Mode

Impact Mode cover

Started 6 (!) years ago, this mashup of Depeche Mode’s Just Can’t Get Enough vs Orbital – Impact (Live) has been featured on mixes, usually from the Parkade but never released – until now. I was never happy with any mashup it has to be told, despite what some people say – stuff that got released either was ‘oh sod it – I’m so fed up with this, that’ll do’ or in some cases had been hanging around for years, and on the 3rd, 4th or 5th iteration.

I estimate I didn’t release almost half of my mashups or more because I wasn’t happy…sometimes I think to their detriment, some of these are perfectly fine. I got rather obsessed with quality – partly because the disdain some of the mashups community showed me and my work, I wanted to ‘show them’. Silly really.

No-one ever did the 30 minute mashup in fact (good ones anyway) – that was a lie, I call bullshit on everyone who said that, you knew they’d spent hours if not days on it. That’s the kind of weird competitiveness that was rife in GYBOland…and beyond.

This one is dedicated to the Parkade and all the DJs there.

Final Mashups #2: Lost At The Beach

lostbeach

A mashup that came out of my long-running remix of The Clash’s ‘Lost In The Supermarket'(more of that soon) 2 years ago, this is a very ambient chilled mashup using Beach House’s Myth…just finished it, and I think it works really well.

Rare unreleased mashups

Having a clear out of the dusty mashup cupboards at NoNo/RadioClash Towers, and found quite a few unfinished or finished but unreleased mashups, or stuff that was on my old Multiply site and never got reposted.

So I’ve uploaded some tracks that fell off Soundcloud, were never really posted/uploaded apart from GYBO, or demos and rarities as well as the other tracks you (don’t) know and (don’t) love. First few are from the GYBO Weekend Challenge where you had only 1-2 days to create them using one or both of the posted acapella(s) or instrumental(s), and so are a bit rough and ready, like demos – but quite good all the same. I tended to only post the winning entries (I won the Weekend Challenge twice, with Bollywood In Space and the first one, Fela Down The Chip Shop. I Heard You Were Ill was another entry, but didn’t win.

britney

First up is Zombie Britney (Britney’s ‘Hold It Against Me’ vs T>Power’s ‘Blissed Out Snacking Zombies’) which was for Weekend Challenge #38 in 2011, wasn’t sure what to expect from this, but it works really well actually. Didn’t win though.

francis

Another for that challenge is Francis In The Desert which is Controlfreak ‘Desert Fox’ vs Sage Francis ‘Slow Down Ghandi’. Works pretty well, Controlfreak loved it – but it does go a little OOT towards the end, but remember all the challenges had to be done over a weekend.

swat

And from Challenge #14 is S.W.A.T – Sugar Cube With Attitude (Compton Hit) – Sugarcubes – Hit with N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton. This works really well, didn’t win though.

Another demo that’s been hanging around for ages (since 2008!), was on this site’s player but not for download (officially) and probably won’t be finished is Silence Anywhere, Depeche Mode vs Presets.

A friend was trying to do a mashup/remix album about bass, and so I did Alternate Justice using Altern-8, Dizzee Rascal and Justice. I think it words surprisingly well, if a bit rough in places. I never really did a Justice track I was happy with, actually apart from DJ Contaminations which tbh was partly a DJ Hero rip!. This is not perfect towards the end, and shows it’s unfinished state, but most of it shows old skool rave flavour!

Another long-lost mashup is another Depeche Mode one, favourite of the Parkade is Impact Mode (Orbital – Impact vs DM’s Just Can’t Get Enough). Had a few goes at this, it’s 99% there. I probably should’ve released it properly, but as ever I just lose interest! EDIT: I did finish this and you can hear it here.

And last but no means least is Star Wars Gurls, a track I’ve had a few goes at and like the last ‘demo’ is pretty much there but got lost in the, err, ‘rush’ *ahem*. It’s Meco’s Star Wars theme vs Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg – California Gurls. I was intending to make a video for this, but again that never happened…in a galaxy far, far away, maybe. EDIT – I also finished this, well as finished as it was going to be.

And don’t forget to check out the one unreleased and the other reposted ambient mashups over at the tbc site.
