I did this mashup of Daft Punk – Digital Love vs Fleetwood Mac – Everywhere back in November, and hung onto to it although it got debuted on the Radio Clash podcast. But now Daft Punk are no more it seemed the right time to release it in their honour. Salute!
P.S. this isn’t the only Everywhere mashup I am working on…or indeed the only FM mashup generally. Depends how many work but was thinking of working on an album or EP of them.
The Rise of The Aliases! I wasn’t exactly a stranger to aliases before but something about the second explosion of work around 2008-2010 meant I was wanting to branch out and not get bogged down with past failures while I was learning…many of which I had to fix on Volume 2!
instamatic, Captain Obvious, Dj cONTaMInAtioNs, Mashbusters, timbearland, Buyrite Soundsystem, they are all here, including never released originals for the first 72 which got hacked around in the final mix -and the receipts on what happened there – and various album projects I was part of like APC’s ‘We All Kissed A Girl’ or ones organised like the Joe Strummmer one This One’s For Joe and Fleetwood Mix.
DJ Hero and GYBO challenges get a look-in too, as does a lot of dubstep which ages this compilation. And like Missy and Em in the last one there are a few artists I mashed once and never again but were ever-present – Deadmau5’s Ghosts n’ Stuff, Flo-Rida’s Low, Eric Prydz’s Pjanoo, Ting Ting’s Shut Up And Let Me Go, The Gossip’s Standing In The Way of Control, White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army, that Duck Sauce track….
Surprised at how uptempo this is, very much aimed at Bootie at this point, and how difficult some of it was to master – I was learning Ableton which strangely made it harder to mix and tweak since although I still use that software, I moved platforms since so many plugins don’t work on my Mac – and I was struggling with using electro house – Daft Punk, Justice etc which has all these mid-range frequencies that clash with vocals.
Also I set T-Racks not only to stun but quite often it’s ‘Kill’ setting – this was the middle of the loudness wars! Hence why I remastered gentler versions here – I don’t like my work to be that bricked, even if it does ‘cut through’ dancefloors.
36 tracks, mostly remastered and for the first time in lossless high quality – 25 album tracks and 11 bonuses with demos, alternate versions and extra tracks that didn’t make the album cut.
I don’t usually do tribute mashups but was wanting to do something for the podcast to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of John Lennon, something with ‘In My Life’ and this popped out with Mogwai’s New Paths To Helicon 1 live at the BBC. Also includes clips from John Lennon RKO Interview on December 8, 1980 and a recording of NY FM radio the next day when his death was announced.
Very ambient, reflective, deep and very much me. And I don’t really care if anyone likes it, it needed to be done. This is for me.
The cover image is the death of Orpheus, killed by the Thracian Maenads for refusing their advances. Apparently “the river Helicon sank underground when the women that killed Orpheus tried to wash off their blood-stained hands in its waters…so as not to lend it’s waters to cleanse manslaughter.” – seemed oddly appropriate, but Mount Helicon is also the famous home to the Muses.
There’s been a long time since a DJNoNo tune and since it seems EVERY tune has been WAPped – I hate WAP, it is the Crazy Frog of 2020 but DJNoNo loves that stuff. So I was surprised to not find this one, Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion -WAP vs Christmas Wrapping – The Waitresses inb4 everyone!
Oh and do I really have to say that WAP is extremely NSFW/dirty? TikTok this kids! I’m too old for that shit…
And a Christmas tune to boot, he hasn’t done one of those for many years. Nine years at least.
I am working on new mashups, this is a quick and dirty one, but there are at least 2-3 in progress. The beast awakes!
UPDATED VERSION – Please delete all previous versions, they ruin Christmas.
Although this mashup of B.Dolan’s ‘Rats Get Fat’ and Ghost’s ‘Rats’ was originally created about the COVID-19 pandemic and started two months ago it seems oddly appropriate about #blackoutuesday and #blacklivesmatter and the riots going on in the States.
Compared to my last one my hope has become anger over the lockdown – it is a mashup about resistance and class war, that rats get fat when good men die, that we are not all in this together, that they don’t care about us, and some of us even less due to the colour of our skin. And given the Ghost lyric about cities burning it seems spookily prescient to the last few days.
Anyway there are two versions – the original rock demo which was hindered by the lack of a decent instrumental, and the ‘Ghostwave’ Synthwave Second Wave version which I think works better using a cover of Rats by Zeropoint.
Mashups are like buses, you wait years then they all get cancelled and you give up. Sorry, two come at once, that’s the saying, right? 🙂 After DJNoNo’s very silly Unhappy Hardcore EP, you have this downtempo number which inspired this Not-Going-To-Finish-This-So-Here-It-Is dump because it came around randomly and I was ‘that’s not bad!’. Which is always a surprise to me.
It’s Procol Harum’s A Whiter Shade of Pale vs Lorde’s Liability (including the reprise, which is slower which caused all kinds of issues) which was fresh and new then, but this was created in February last year (!). I do sometimes create mashups but rarely feel the need to spend days polishing them. This is a bit rough but I think it has a good mood and fits well and the bits that don’t ‘the kids will never know’ or they aren’t massively wrong….not really selling it am I? Have a listen and see what you think – When Lorde Went Psych!
Err, I have retired. Honest. DJNoNo didn’t get that message though, so this silly fun thing slipped out. Naughty NoNo. Apparently he heard the Monkees track and started singing Last Train to Clarksvile…Jungle VIP!
TV Nation is a mashup that has been hanging around in multiple demo forms since 2008, now thanks to better stems and acapellas it’s finished (I know I said I retired but this was an opportunity too good to miss, always wanted this to work – also always wanted to do a good Daft Punk mashup). It’s Daft Punk – Television Rules The Nation vs Spearhead’s Rock The Nation vs Montrose – Rock The Nation and a few bits from the Beatnigs / Disposable Heroes of Hiphopcrisy – Television Drug of the Nation.
And it’s oddly topical now, with Donald Trump and the presidential elections coming up, the lines about media manipulation and fat tycoons, people staying in their bubble and not wanting to step out of it. Sadly still very current.
Thanks go out to DJ Schmolli, Ian Fondue, Jez Celebrity Murder Party and Lee Spoons for their advice and help.
This is a real Friday/Saturday jam, my remix of the long-forgotten Demis Roussos (sadly we lost him last year) classic from 1975, ‘Midnight Is The Time I Need You’.
When I heard this tune as with the Midnight Stud I not only fell in love with a dusty disco classic, I thought it needed to be longer as it was only ever a 7″ length track, more DJ-friendly, warped to the beat, remastered and general shininess added.
I listened to all the re-edits out there and found them good but a bit lacking…this indeed started as a re-edit, but I just kept adding stuff, so it’s the most remix-y remix I’ve done (usually I try and be more like edits, fairly transparent in what I add, mostly about structure and drums/bass)
Spin that glitterball death star! In time for the new film (although completely by accident, long before Lucas was a twinkle in Disney’s eye, these mashups were started 5-10 years ago) here are the first of two Star Wars mashups.
Star Wars Gurls is Meco’s Star Wars goes space disco via California Gurls with Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg.
I’ve always had a bad feeling about this, it’s been a real disturbance in the Force over the years and probably still is a bucket of bolts, due to strange minor bits in the Meco track. In the end I had to use the Melodyne trial to force the acapella into key…Use the Force Luke! Well we know mashups shouldn’t be forced, but I’ve always wanted to release this, so treat it as a bit of fun. Still will make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs!
