A mashup I started and pretty much finshed in 2021 for a Crumplbangers Challenge and never released. I rediscovered it yesterday on my backup MP3 player and went ‘why did I never release this?!’
It’s not the first Radiohead vs Fleetwood Mac mashup I’ve done, not even the first vs Christine McVie (Surprise Daddy is the first)! But it’s my first using Reckoner and Over and Over, and has a real vibe.
Rolling the credits on 2021…as Billie Eilish says, Fuck You to 2021.
There was a Crumplbangers Discord challenge last week to make an ‘ending’ mashup for 2021 using only 2021 sources, so I decided to use two tracks I loved and actually only heard this year – Taylor’s Version of ‘All Too Well’ and Billie Eilish’s hit ‘Happier Than Ever’.
I realised while I was tweaking it what it was about, I lost a close longterm friend a year ago over his behaviour which had been a problem for a long time, but I had been dealing with it alone, keeping it under wraps. He then chose to escalate it to the circle of mutual friends and tread over my boundaries, which was far from acceptable. It wasn’t acceptable to begin with, but I felt if I could control it, keep the peace, it’d be fine (stupidly), but as soon as it broke those bounds I couldn’t really see how I could carry on pretending it’s OK anymore.
Yet I never closed the door and made it clear what my boundaries were but that he could contact me when he wanted to be a friend and be there for me. Sadly a year later it’s still total radio silence, so this has very deep personal meaning since the anger at what he did is still there, and the sadness of that loss was basically my 2021.
But also feeling better without that negativity, because I didn’t realise how much manipulation had gone on til I stopped and had to explain it to that mutual friend. I realised how much it was affecting my mood, it was a weight lifted. To be constantly aware that any positive thing about myself would be pounced on as ‘bragging’ or get bitchy criticisms when drunk I could not answer to because then the tantrums and sulking would start.
So this is the end credits on 2021 but also unless a miracle happens, probably rolling the sunset end credits on that friendship.
BTW this combo has been done before (as far as I can find) but only as the reverse – Taylor Swift’s vocals over Billie Eilish’s instrumental, so I think this is an original and not a reboot.
P.S. All original artwork, well the photos are CC Zero – background from Engin Akyurt and the red man is from khezez, but the montage and post production is all mine. It took a lot to find an image relating to the ‘red scarf’ of All Too Well, the man overboard is my friend (or me), and the underwater part is from video of Happier Than Ever.
I do think about these things far too much! Then again, looking at Billie Elish’s video and Taylor Swift’s short film, so do they.
This is a mashup for the current Crumpbangers Discord Weekly Challenge which this week is set by reconthuse – he wanted us to take a favourite mashup, then reboot it using the same artists (or album, although that rule has been relaxed) in an adjacent alternate reality combination.
I chose Party Ben’s Bizarre Light Triangle (Madonna – Ray of Light vs New Order – Bizarre Love Triangle), and strictly True Faith wasn’t on the same album as it was non-album single (but it was on Substance and the Deluxe version of Brotherhood later) but Nothing Really Matters was on the Ray of Light album.
It bangs, and I think it works really well, I was asking myself ‘What Would Party Ben Do?’ when doing this. And ironically it’s almost a reboot in itself, because I came up with the combo then later found back in 2010 Eden did this combo but as a DJ club remix with the full tracks, not a A vs B mashup as you can hear it is very different.
Let me know if the Grand Mashup Council thinks I should credit this in the title as a reboot – I mention it in the comments in the MP3 & Sowndhaus, but I personally think it’s a stretch to say it’s a direct reboot, but it’s a grey area…
This was made back in May for another project but never finished, so I tidied it up for the newly resurrected Captain Obvious.
I didn’t release it then cos I hate the Biebster but like the instrumental of ‘Peaches’ and love the Sam Smith song, so another dark uptempo happy/sad bittersweet groover with cheesy pop – with extra Donnie Darko spoken word, cos that’s where Sam Smith got those bits.
A nostalgic mashup for the end of summer, and originally made for Useo’s Summer Booty but not finished in time – so doubly fashionably late for the beach party!
Solar Power meets Bobby Goldsboro’s The First Time, a forgotten classic from 1973. Even has the same hint of menace/weirdness at the end like the original Solar Power track.
Purely out of the blue I decided to recreate Thriftshop XL’s Toxic Love Shack bootleg from 2004. Remember that? I’m sure everyone has forgotten it by now.
Anyway I have never done a B-52’s – Love Shack nor a Britney Spears – Toxic mashup *clutch pearls – I kno rite?* so with this mashup I put that right forthwith. Using The Bluebeater’s excellent ‘One Drop’ ska version of Toxic, with the original vocals for a ska/dubby summer jam.
Oh and FREE BRITNEY (well seems like she is, but who knows by the time this gets published – btw I am writing this in advance as I’ll be on holiday when this goes out). (Also might be why the player isn’t visible as I will try to switch it to public on some remote cliff somewhere – but might not get any signal!)
I was surprised my favourite song ‘That Funny Feeling’ wasn’t included (I like it so much it’s featured on the next podcast, the list show #2), so I’ve given it the Radiohead rock treatment.
Again, a personal mashup about alienation, state of the world….and mental health.
Just a reminder I have a track on this year’s Summer Booty from DJ Useo – very proud of it, it’s called ‘Summertime Shake’ and it’s Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ vs DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince Kool and the Gang sampling ‘Summertime’ – the whole 3 album set is good, a lot of summer jams (and one winter jam ;-( ) – you can download it here https://audioboots.org/Albums/SB2021/
Useo asked me to be on the album which is really kind, but nothing came to me until the night of the deadline. I was going through tracks for last week’s Crumplbangers challenge and left Summertime playing while I was listening to Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off and went ‘hold on…this works!’. I am a massive Kool & The Gang fan (I even own a 7″ of Jungle Boogie, blame Pulp Fiction for that) and Summertime is basically Summer Madness so it was Kool and the Gang by proxy for me..
