Pagan Weeknd (Die For Your Poetry) (The Weeknd vs Björkj

The Weeknd Die For You vs Bjork - Pagan Poetry mashup tbc Instamatic

For AA.

“a secret code carved…”

And the moodymashes haven’t gone away….they just got shelved for the festive and disco fare which is also posted very soon or elsewhere!. .

Some songs just trigger an immediate personal reaction, like going straight back to where I was. Pagan Poetry was one, a difficult time where I was in love with someone I should not have been, and he’s long gone to a distant Valhalla – or more likely Helheim. The Björk song reminded me of him and works really well with Die For You, which has similar themes of darkness and uncertainty. Hence I wanted to reflect that sound of whispers, secret codes, the claustrophobia and yearning, the darkness and light.

To say this The Weeknd’s Die For You vs Bjork – Pagan Poetry mash is highly personal and just done for me to express something I can’t express in words…is an understatement. I nearly didn’t post it for those reasons….it’s skirting too close to the wind. Layers upon layers of what I reveal (or don’t), secret codes, whispers, ghosts – that’s what I put into this. It’s odd for someone who seems to be an open book, there are chapters that are firmly glued shut. A dark horse hiding out as a unicorn.

After I made it I found out the Weeknd song is big on The TikToks. Shame I’m not really one to post there after having 2 of my videos immediately pulled.

I thought that doing this might give some resolution, exorcise the memories but turns out, it doesn’t work like that. It feels too naked and revealing, but maybe other people can relate?

Collaborations – DJFnoFno and InsToTomatic +2 Bonuses

Myself and DJNoNo don’t so collaborations as much as we should, but there was a challenge to do so – hence these tracks from DJFnoFno (fnogg and DJNoNo) and InsToTomatic (ToTom & Instamatic).

Also we have +2 Bonuses (Bonusii?) of lost tracks from DJNoNo.

DJ Fno Fno (fnogg and DJNoNo) Royals At The Gay Bar (Lorde vs Electric Six) collaboration mashup

I bring you: DJ Fno Fno! (Messrs fnogg & DJNoNo) and their Royals At The Gay Bar – Lorde – Royals vs Electric Six – Gay Bar for the Crumplbangers Challenge Collab Week. This got a special mention cos of the name 😉

Idea was from fnogg entirely, production was shared between them, passing Ableton Live projects back and forth a few times.

fnogg did the first rough demo pass with YT ripped stems, DJNoNo then recreated a HQ Electric Six instrumental from the stems with a totally new instrumental mix (we couldn’t find a HQ of the instrumental), and then edited it to the demo to fnogg’s template. He then added that and the Lorde and Gay bar vocals HQ stems to match and created the breakdown and ending which wasn’t in the demo.

fnogg then took it over and then redid the Gay bar timings and added more in, and did the drop/cutins and the whoops and basically made it 100% funnier. Passed it back to DJNoNo for final massaging, mastering, production and general faffing.

Artwork was a shared collab too, with DJNoNo at the controls and input, advice and other concepts from fnogg.

nsToTomatic (ToTom & Instamatic) - Alright Here Comes The Lollipop Police (Blondie vs Supergrass vs Police vs Eurythmics vs Wannadies vs Millie) collaboration mashup

Another mashup from the Crumplbanger Discord Collab challenge. This got 3rd place and “Best Multimash’ special mention 🙂

Us two? Doing multimashes? With our A vs B reputations?

Started as a demo from ToTom with just the Supergrass and Blondie and nothing for the verses or ending. Invaluably he had marked out the segments with key shifts, which was a great help with my lack of music theory.

After some Ableton Live tech woes where I had to sort of rebuild the project by pasting it into Ableton Live Lite a bit at a time (!), I added the others but there was a lot of back and forth swapping certain bits out, finding out what artists we hate 😉

Some artists came and went but it became a narrative theme multimash about obsessive love and we had a lot of fun with the call and response).

Production/mastering is my fault (and proved to me that I really should use my nicer headphones rather than the in-ear buds, it’s how I spotted that the original instrumental was out of phase!).

InsToTomatic (ToTom & Instamatic) – Alright Here Comes The Lollipop Police (Blondie vs Supergrass vs Police vs Eurythmics vs Wannadies vs Millie)

DJNoNo - Royal Tribes Go To War (Frankie Goes To Hollywood vs The Beef Seeds)

FIRST BONUS! Not a collaboration but a lost DJNoNo demo for a collaborative compilation.I rummaged around NoNo’s closet and this fell out. It was created for a bluegrass compilation that didn’t happen (?) and was rejected anyway cos they didn’t want covers or humour – it uses a cover of The Beef Seeds covering Lorde’s Royals – yes another Royals mashup – so was abandoned. Listening back it’s classic NoNo and works pretty well.

And given what’s happened to the royals and war since, weirdly prophetic.

DJNoNo - Oops Oh My Superman (Tweet vs Laurie Anderson)

DOUBLE BONUS! Another lost mashup – this time for a challenge, not sure whay he was thinking about when he made Laurie Anderson’s artpop O Superman into a twerking RnB sexy mess, but here we are. Tweet never sounded so….arty? It was an RnB challenge so I guess he thought it was funny. It works weirdly very well.

(“This is your mother” made me LOL for reals…I had forgotten that bit)

Something About The Wikka Cat (Evasions vs Doja Cat vs Daft Punk)

Something About The Wikka Cat (Evasions vs Doja Cat vs Daft Punk) something about the wikka cat

A finally one I’m really proud of and was the only real ‘exclusive’ in my Crumplstock set (the others being unreleased things a few people had heard). I’ve always wanted to make a Chic vs DP bootleg, so I did it via the back door! I heard Doja Cat while dancing at one of the last Duckie clubs and started singing Wikka Wrap by the Evasions over it (shout out to Rhythm Scholar whose remix of Coolio’s 1,2,3,4 reminded me of it recently).

When I got home, I tried it and it worked! And of course it directly references Good Times, and then I found that Something About Us vocals worked with that, so it’s the most funkiest and smoothest summeriest mashup I’ve ever done.

Everything But The Girl vs Kylie / Eurythmics Shame megamix

Instamatic - Missing Head (Everything But The Girl vs Kylie) mashup cover

A side product of trying to do an instrumental vs instrumental mashup for this week’s crumplbanger challenge – it’s a mix like it’s 2002 all over again! Bastard Pop rules! Everything But The Girl’s Missing and Kylie’s Can’t Get You Out of My Head are basically the same song, but from different angles, I think.

(Pretty sure this hasn’t been done as there wasn’t a Missing acapella in the past, but it sounds so obvious it should have been done.)

Instamatic – Missing Head (Everything But The Girl vs Kylie)

Instamatic - Eurythmics - Shame (Switching Channels Minimix - Two Door Cinema Club vs Disposable Heroes of Hiphopcrisy vs Chic vs Vybz Kartel vs Beatles vs Maria Callas vs Nu Shooz vs Rolling Stones) mashup cover

This is closer to a remix/megamix/minimix mashup medley than my normal AvsB – based around Eurythmics – Shame. It was done fo Last Week’s Crumplbangers Challenge where you had to use songs that referenced others songs or bands.

Shame mentions two bands and references two songs directly in the lyrics- Rolling Stones – We Love You and Beatles – All You Need Is Love. Unfortunately those are both in the wrong key, so could only use drop ins and not the whole track.

So I wanted to include more as it talks about various other subjects so I included various bands and track titles referencing that (had to play fairly loose with those). Getting the mix was fun (!) as was extracting or finding all the bits needed. It’s also probably the only entry that has both opera (Puccini) AND Dancehall!

We Hate Drum and Bass and Sea Shanties

DJNoNo - Pröpänë Kïckstärt (Mötley Crüe vs Pendulum vs Adriana A) (Salty Version) mashup cover

DJNoNo’s response to the Crumplbangers Hair Metal is to add pounding drum and bass – it’s been ages since he did a rock Pendulum bootleg, it still works so well….

And given the criticism from certain quarters, here’s an appropriately respectful mashup *ahem* from him, it’s ages since he did a rock vs Pendulum bootleg, and why not choose the dreadful poodle rockers Müttlëy Crüdë to do it with?

BTW the title is Pröpänë Kïckstärt not Propane Kickstart, he hopes to crash your Twitch feed with too many umlauts. Maybe you’ll get a Derailed Hype Train instead :-p

There is a salt-free version for those with södiüm issüës and don’t want the shade further down the page!

DJNoNo - Pröpänë Kïckstärt (Mötley Crüe vs Pendulum) (Salt Free version) mashup cover

This is the salt-free shadeless version of this mashup also created for the Hair Metal challenge over at the Crumplbangers Discord, to celebrate that in fact Adriana DOES like drum and bass if it’s mixed with Muttley Crude as DJNoNo calls them…

The original got a great reaction on the Mashup Listening Bootie Twitch a few nights ago, which prompted me to get this out there before I go on my travels.

The only thing I think DJNoNo and Motley Crowd agree on is the impröpër üsë of ümläüts which will probably crash your computer or something….

DJNoNo – Pröpänë Kïckstärt (Mötley Crüe vs Pendulum) (Salt Free version)

Also this track was rebooted/built upon by the excelllent iWillBattle for a Halloween crumplbanger adding some of Rina Sawayama who I am very mucn a fan of:

DJNoNo - Hog Eye Dust (Martin Carthy vs DJ Fresh) mashup cover

DJNoNo introduces Shanty n’ Bass – a new genre! Yes this isn’t the rudest – pretty rude though if you listen to the lyrics (err what goes chuff chuff?!?), it’s not what it seems…and it’s an OG shanty – 1860’s.

Probably the only time Martin Carthy has met drum and bass also.

Created for the Crumplbangers Discord Challenge – YARR!

DJNoNo – Hog Eye Dust (Martin Carthy vs DJ Fresh)

BONUS MASHUP!

We Hate Drum and Bass and Sea Shanties all the lubbers

Continuing the sea shanty theme – It didn’t win the challenge yet it got ‘special mention’ and made DJNoNo laugh and is very Crumpl. A reminder that sea shantys are not Wellerman and are usually rude af.

Very old shanty/rugby/drinking song Good Ship Venus – here by Loudon Wainwright III – meets Kylie’s All My Lovers. I’m sure Kylie fans will hate it also 🙂

Again for the Sea Shanty Challenge….it’s very rude!

New mashup videos on YouTube

Following the post of the tbc mashup videos to Youtube, here’s two Instamatic videos that are rather more upbeat – well sorta, the next one is more of a tbc track in all but name, but like a lot of recent mashups has not been posted here but has been posted over at Sowndhaus,

Joji vs P!NK What Glimpse Of Us – ostensibly about a empty relationship vs the same but also a cry for justice, becomes a song about the planet and climate change as the animals in the video look at us accusingly and say ‘what about us?’. With COP27 on the way and last night reading a great interview with Bjork and Greta Thunberg it was on my mind.

The allgator eye was the image from the Joji single so was the starting point, but I couldn’t find enough croc clips – so I diversified and it became something else.

More upbeat is this video for Something About The Wikka Cat (Evasions vs Doja Cat vs Daft Punk which is one of my favourite recent tracks, finally successfully making a Daft Punk track that works 100% and mixing in Evasions novelty funk tune, Wikka Wrap which is a fave of mine. Doja Cat was unknown to me until fairly recently, but ‘Say So’ is TOTAL disco so works with the Chic Good Times nods.

And the video? Well it’s just a tropical good time party, where I wish I was rather than damp cold grey England…

Back to YouTube – New Mashup Videos

I have neglected my old YouTube channel somewhat – I’ve done the odd Live stream but not many proper videos for my mashups. Feeling I should make some quick ones, and at first planning to just make simple artwork only videos, I got sucked into making visualisations, or simpler videos for my work. I have created 3 major videos in the past 24 hours, and two artwork ones. Here are the tbc ones, the Instamatic ones ar in another post.

I also haven’t been posting many of my works here or over at my mashup blog, just dumping them on Sowndhaus so good to dust them off and push them out there a bit more.

First up is American Dream Part 3 mashup (LCD Soundsystem vs Paul Simon vs Elvis vs Idlewild vs Suicide vs Taylor Swift vs MKTO) – but of course, this was the only one to get blocked, so a revisit to an old dusty Vimeo account as well!

All these videos are experiments in not using band or artist footage which tends to bring the blocks faster than you can say ‘Lego party’. I am using either longer shots or re-using footage and not getting too hung, or totally reframing the mashup with a new narrative.

And a simpler one, I found these falling leaves on Pexels so thought it was perfect for my ES vs ES mash, Autumn Man (Elliott Smith / Heatmiser vs Ed Sheeran). Surprised this hasn’t had more legs, it’s been mostly ignored – I preferred the Carpenters vs Elliott one but totally knew that the mood meshed perfectly with this one. I had a weird feeling it would be the one that would ‘fly’ but no, it’s the other one.which incidentally just got an artwork video.. Not sure that needs a full one.

Bootie Top 10 – Genesis vs U2 vs Negativland

Instamatic Still Haven't Thrown It All Away (Genesis vs U2 vs Negativland) mashup cover Bootie Top 10

I am seriously behind posting my mashups to my site and here – check my Sowndhaus page for the up-to-date latest releases, but this recent mashup made the Bootie Top 10 for June – surprised because it features Negativland, not the usually most ‘pop’ of artists (although they are popstars in my heart…) but the rest is very radio friendly.

It mixes Genesis with more memories of 1986 with ‘Throwing It All Away’ – one of my first albums was Invisible Touch and I still stand by that album – mixed with U2’s stadium-bothering I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and the lawyer-bothering ‘The Letter U and the Numeral 2’ acapella and ‘radio edit’ which U2 famously nuked and is a part of mashup/copyright history.

I even did a ‘booper’ radio version – I asked The Weatherman if I could use some of his booper and he said yes, so I took some bits to edit out the rudeness, still think those bits are too strange for radio, but Stranger Things have happened (see what I did there?)

GOh Beat! (The Linda Lindas vs The Go Go’s)

GOh Beat! (Linda Lindas vs Go Go's) mashup instamatic bootleg bastard pop new wave punk

Probably the first Linda Lindas mashup?

This was done for this week’s Crumplbanger’s Challenge which was from Will Battle – and he challenged us to use a track from a band on the When We Were Young festival. A lot of bands I am not into, but at the bottom is The Linda Linda’s which I LOVE.

Listening to their last but one single ‘Oh!’ I was reminded of the Go Go’s and We Got The Beat, so I mashed the two together. A short pop punk gem, if I say so myself.

This was awarded 4th out of a massive week of 35 entries! Very proud of that.

Run The Jungle (Run The Jewels vs Dwarde & Tim Reaper)

Run The Jungle (Run The Jewels vs Dwarde & Tim Reaper) mashup bootleg drum and bass bastard pop

Another lost mashup – this Jungle/drum and bass remake of the then current Ooh La La by RTJ got played on the podcast in demo form in 2020 but never released.

Here is the updated and tidied up version, it’s a lot cleaner and has an ending, of sorts!
