It was a Video Game Challenge last week, and I had fun messing with the music of various games. One of the few games I totally fell in love with and was obsessed by for months if not years was Fez, the 2D/3D platformer from 2012. A big part of that was the music. The game had a deep significance for me, something almost spiritual?
These two from Rich Vreeland aka Disasterpeace’s soundtrack for Fez vs Weeknd were the result, but I think this glitchy one was a bit too late for the challenge. Fun with the Hysteresis plugin.
Call Yr Fez (Weeknd – Call Out Your Name vs Disasterpeace – Sync/Glitch (from Fez))
And I love all my mashup children but this one is my favourite. Something about the Weeknd plus Fez’s distorted glitchy mournful soundscapes just works – but Ariana brings human warmth especially at the end, which always makes me smile.
I’m sure it’ll fall into the black hole that all my other ‘You Won’t Like It’ ‘record label’ releases have fallen into, and was totally ignored like all my entries for the challenge (but oki’s amazing Queen mashup toitally deserved to win) but this is very much how I hear things.
P.S. this is my first Ariana Grande mashup EVER!
Save Yr Fez (Weeknd & Ariana Grande – Save Your Tearrs vs Disasterpeace – Adventure (from Fez))
A mashup I started and pretty much finshed in 2021 for a Crumplbangers Challenge and never released. I rediscovered it yesterday on my backup MP3 player and went ‘why did I never release this?!’
It’s not the first Radiohead vs Fleetwood Mac mashup I’ve done, not even the first vs Christine McVie (Surprise Daddy is the first)! But it’s my first using Reckoner and Over and Over, and has a real vibe.
Picking up where the first one left off with also a look into the pre-history of my first mashups – included is my third ever mashup, and there is earlier in the secret bonus section *only* with the full album download.
Includes: Exclusive unreleased bootlegs and annotations for each bootleg, extra bonus demos and alternate versions, and I have remixed and remastered many of them to make them all nice and shiny for 2020.
I have sourced 36 of the 38 tracks from lossless sources, many for the first time as they existed only as low-res MP3 on here.
It is like a bootleg box set!
And there is more to come in this set, I have deeply raked over the last 17 years of making mashups.
Instamatic – Future Sound of Peaches (Future Sound of London vs Peaches 2003-4)
Instamatic – Jump Uprising minimix including Ludakris Bastard version (Ludacris vs Kriss Kross vs Kid Carpet), Jump x2 (House of Pain vs Kriss Kross) and Renegade Trouble (Wildchild vs Beastie Boys) – 2004
Instamatic – My Telephone Doesn’t Work (aka Telephonic Sympathy – Missy Elliott vs Kraftwerk vs Coldcut vs Grandmaster Scott and Dynamic 3 – 2005 – 2020 tweaks)
As part of the big cupboard cleaning mentioned in the main post, I found some old tbc tracks, including a redo I did of one of my Boards of Canada tracks, Saturday Sunshine (2012 Retweak) (Boards of Canada ‘Hey Saturday Sun’ vs Roy Ayers ‘Everybody Loves the Sunshine’) which had a re-rub a few years back, to give it a happier, sunnier sheen.
Early on, sometimes I’d abandon tracks and post them as they were…this happened to ‘I Try But The Words Weigh Too Much’ – Macy Gray’s ‘I Try…’ vs Kings of Convenience – ‘Weight of my Words (Four Tet Remix) – which was online in 2004 or 2005, as part of my old multiply site, but not since. Tuning issues, but then again that’s not always easy with Macy Gray…
Having a clear out of the dusty mashup cupboards at NoNo/RadioClash Towers, and found quite a few unfinished or finished but unreleased mashups, or stuff that was on my old Multiply site and never got reposted.
So I’ve uploaded some tracks that fell off Soundcloud, were never really posted/uploaded apart from GYBO, or demos and rarities as well as the other tracks you (don’t) know and (don’t) love. First few are from the GYBO Weekend Challenge where you had only 1-2 days to create them using one or both of the posted acapella(s) or instrumental(s), and so are a bit rough and ready, like demos – but quite good all the same. I tended to only post the winning entries (I won the Weekend Challenge twice, with Bollywood In Space and the first one, Fela Down The Chip Shop. I Heard You Were Ill was another entry, but didn’t win.
First up is Zombie Britney (Britney’s ‘Hold It Against Me’ vs T>Power’s ‘Blissed Out Snacking Zombies’) which was for Weekend Challenge #38 in 2011, wasn’t sure what to expect from this, but it works really well actually. Didn’t win though.
Another for that challenge is Francis In The Desert which is Controlfreak ‘Desert Fox’ vs Sage Francis ‘Slow Down Ghandi’. Works pretty well, Controlfreak loved it – but it does go a little OOT towards the end, but remember all the challenges had to be done over a weekend.
Another demo that’s been hanging around for ages (since 2008!), was on this site’s player but not for download (officially) and probably won’t be finished is Silence Anywhere, Depeche Mode vs Presets.
A friend was trying to do a mashup/remix album about bass, and so I did Alternate Justice using Altern-8, Dizzee Rascal and Justice. I think it words surprisingly well, if a bit rough in places. I never really did a Justice track I was happy with, actually apart from DJ Contaminations which tbh was partly a DJ Hero rip!. This is not perfect towards the end, and shows it’s unfinished state, but most of it shows old skool rave flavour!
Another long-lost mashup is another Depeche Mode one, favourite of the Parkade is Impact Mode (Orbital – Impact vs DM’s Just Can’t Get Enough). Had a few goes at this, it’s 99% there. I probably should’ve released it properly, but as ever I just lose interest! EDIT: I did finish this and you can hear it here.
And last but no means least is Star Wars Gurls, a track I’ve had a few goes at and like the last ‘demo’ is pretty much there but got lost in the, err, ‘rush’ *ahem*. It’s Meco’s Star Wars theme vs Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg – California Gurls. I was intending to make a video for this, but again that never happened…in a galaxy far, far away, maybe. EDIT – I also finished this, well as finished as it was going to be.
And don’t forget to check out the one unreleased and the other reposted ambient mashups over at the tbc site.
Yes in time for Christmas – it’s a new remastered version of Losing My Sledge by TBC Poundsystem (myself and Jeb 50 Pound Note) – a Xmas cover version & mashup of LCD Soundsystem’s Losing My Edge – this time with remastered/remixed audio, and funky dancing Santa lipsync video with pink tinsel, fairy lights and other kitsch campness! Those with long memories will remember this from 2006 but not sure I posted it here – well here it is in much better remixed form!
Mashup also features MJ’s Don’t Stop If You Get Enough & Lipps Inc’s Funkytown, as well as sleighbells by moi and vocals by Jeb. It’s the first net release from Jeb’s Kuma-Chan records, KUMA 1000. More to come from Kuma-Chan – watch this space (well the links down below).
PRESSIES! Download the remixed 2012 track with a new dub instrumental b-side and amazing 4 page artwork by Jeb! Spread – upload – share – annoy neighbours, play over the turkey, dance like a santa-loon etc.
Happy Holidays From Tim and Jeb! And all at Kuma-Chan and Radio Clash! (same thing, LOL)
Captain Obvious Strikes Again! His latest mashup is so unapologetically gay it would spontaneously set a Chick-Fil-A on fire with it’s glamourous flamboyant hot mess campness!
It’s Madonna’s ‘Vogue’ vs Scissor Sisters ‘Let’s Have A Kiki’ – I so LOVE the Kiki track still, it’s not true so when I found the acapella I had to make it even camper. In fact camp as a row of tents but then so am I when at a Kiki 😉 BIG AIR MWAHS to Ronald Koenders and CjR for various *gorgeous* accessories.
A rarity a new mashup from me…a sequel of sorts to the Golden Mirror this I think works better…it’s Fleetwood Mac – Rhiannon vs Sia’s Breathe Me, a simple A vs B but I think has a great ambient mood, and makes me think of birds and wind and welsh goddesses.
Not sure if this should belong in the tbc or the Instamatic realm, it’s ambient so filed it under tbc. I’d thought I’d posted this, actually it was only posted on Twitter and Facebook just before I left for Egypt in November.
This is a rarity for me – an Elbow bootleg (!) given my “love” for that band but the music is really good here and bonus you don’t get to hear Guy Garvey wail. I’ve paired ‘Mirror Ball’ with Fleetwood Mac’s Gold Dust Woman, gives it an eery edge and as the original blurb for this said on Facebook it’s dedicated to Hathor, Mami Wata and Hatshepsut.
