Fourth in the American Trilogy (well it worked for Douglas Adams) I came across Martina McBride’s Independence Day and stopped in my tracks. New country is rarely my thing, but I was struck at how gothic/new wave it was, with it’s messages of domestic violence and independence via arson and death….cheery!
I’m sure Goth Country exists somewhere, but this is very much a Goth Country mashup.
Me? Mashing modern country and gothic rock? With MY reputation? Err, Happy 4th of July?
Also weirdly right-wing patriotic types who never listen to lyrics have tried to claim it as an anthem…which according to the songwriter it’s very much not. So let’s reclaim it in a dark fashion?
So of course I had to pair it with Sisters of Mercy – Lucretia My Reflection…and also a part of Con Air because it always reminded me of that old hymn ‘He’s Got The Whole World In His Hand’ – if you know why I put that in, you know. Also the revolutionary women resisting violence theme of the Martina McBride song map onto the real-life of Roman noblewoman Lucretia.
This goes out to PDSMix and his Goth Taco Mukbang and of course, Adriana.
