OK for some reason I decided to do the latest Crumplbanger Challenge set by Titus Jones on Hard Mode, cos I forgot that Pink Floyd’s Money is in 7/4. Probably the only 7/4 track in this challenge….and also only my second Kesha mashup ever (WAAAAY back in the day I did one where she guested with Flo-Rida).
Not a fan of Kesha, but I like Rich White Straight Men, not heard it before – and a brilliant video.
When I heard it I instantly thought of Money by Pink Floyd – even down to the cash register noises. They are one of my favourites for mashups and a link to my childhood, as are ABBA – my oldest half-sister had a shit-ton of prog and that’s partly why I had a dislike for prog cos Emerson Lake and Palmer is hard going for a child – but I did really like her Pink Floyd albums and Mike Oldfield, and asked her to play those.
I loved those tracks but PF were deeply unfashionable in the 80’s and I struggled with the earlier stuff post Syd and those long solos and albums. I was an 80’s pop kid at heart, I hated minor keys even and indie music! Which is odd I am all about John Peel and guitars now, but back then pre-teen, was very major key.
My youngest eldest (?) half-sister was into ABBA. This was more my style, pop music I could understand better. She had the Super Trouper album with Happy New Year on it, hence the recent mash of it. I’ve grown to love ABBA as well as I get older, it was a bit of a guilty secret in the 80’s. But great pop, so I always defended that and hid my PF albums as a later punk 🙂 Key change fun with that too, most of it is in the wrong key, it chipmunks.
P.S. I had to edit out most of the sax solos and some of the guitar cos FFS do they go on…. also the end speech of the PF weirdly reflects the Kesha – blokes saying ‘I was right’ and woman saying ‘you’re cruising for a bruising’ so I left it in. A lot of intentional vocal interplay, with Roger Waters voicing the Rich White Straight Man.
Oh and whisper tag for sure (a bonus on the challenge is to create a ‘Titus Jones’ style whisper tag – you’ll hear a robotic one on the DJNoNo entry and a more traditional one here, but with vocal doubling magic 🙂
